Greystonelea Lodge was designed and built with the highest concern for the environment, and it's ecological impact, from the foundations up. This is the reason for all the green aspects of the Lodge, such as the solar heated water, recycling facilities, wood burning stove, as well as other lighting and heating choices.
Solar Panel Heated Water
Discreet solar panels are affixed to the roof, and when there is sufficient sunlight, or ultra violet light, water is pumped through them, giving a supply of naturally heated water, with no air polluting emissions. The solar heating is anti-freeze and chemical free, in order not to create water pollution. If there is not enough sunlight or UV to heat the water, the computer controlled system stops the flow of water to the panels, leaving the backup efficient kerosene oil backup external condensing heating boiler.
Ecological Heating
There is always an inclusive supply of suitably seasoned mixed native wood for the wood burning stove from the privately owned hundred and ten acres of forest. The wood here is from silver birch, pine, and other types of wood, creating a rich fireside experience. The wood burner can also burn paper waste from the Lodge, reducing the amount of refuse produced.
Recycling
Away from the main building is the recycling area, where there are specified bins where all the common recyclable materials can be disposed of, such as glass, cans, and paper.
Composting
Greystonelea Lodge has begun a composting initiative with a nearby organic farm on their land, by which all biodegradable waste from the Lodge and the main house on the estate will be taken and used to fertilize growing vegetables in poly-tunnels on the farm land without the need for harmful pesticides.
Building Materials
The Lodge was built using traditional Scottish building materials to achieve a traditional yet modern building. These materials included:
- Stone cladding
- Slates
- Recycled Aberdeen Cobbles
- Home grown Larch timber cladding
